Abstraction means freedom in representational view on a pice of work
“I understand abstract art as an attempt to feed imagination with a world built through the basic sensations of the eyes.” – Jean Helion
for this piece of work we had to choose from the six images above and from left to right the most absract to least I think the left was the most abstract because it does not look normal and the right is something you can see any day
this image was the most abstract and we had to think what makes it like this and having us draw it helped us all focus on the small details and helped us wander the question I think that it would be called shadow of the day.
for this we had to go around school and make abstract photos I like the first one because you can see something from a whole new angle and can see the vast differences between it
formal elements
focus:
light: line: repetition: shape: space: texture: value/tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? is there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
photograms collage making
for this we had to cut out photograms and make a collage of them and use a range of devices scisors and home punches to create an abstract photogram
positive contact print
for this work we used the photogram collage we made last lesson and went to the dark room and used the machine to make our collages the opposite of the photograms we used and chemicals to show
photoshop
today we used photoshop to create a blend of an image and the image we created in the dark room
Patrick Lears
Patrick Lears is an artist and a art proffesional with over 25 years of experience he makes a range of sculptures and photograms
Dafna Talmor Research
Dafna Talmor is a photographer that from pictures uses multiple pictures to combine and make a wonderful piece. i think that she uses a darkroom and must take pictures almost everywhere she goes based on the amount she may need. i think the picture is made of combined mountains i can see a range of shapes from triangles and rectangles but also shapes without names this can create an effect of mystery.I think the title constructed landscapes is supposed the mean using pictures of a landscape to create a whole new piece as shown in this picture. the range of locations can create a lot of thought for the person looking at it and can help them think and clear minds and see what other places look like and what makes them so good.
constructed landscapes
today dana talmor came in for a workshop she explained how her experiences with photography has changes and became a profession we worked to make pieces that use almost the same techniques she used. we used a range of equipment such as a light mat, slide projector,35mm slide, sellotape, hole punches, couloured cellophane, highlighter pens, etc. this equipment was used to make our own slides based on the ones we were given we cut them up and used certain parts to make an abstract piece we used the light mats to see them then scalpels to cut the pieces we wanted. after we had made an image we go to a projector to see it bigger we used the Tallis character persistence to change and improve our slides. talmor uses negative prints while we used positive that is the main difference between what we made.
this is my favourite piece I made during the dana taller workshop as it uses a range of science graphs to make a piece that creates a sense of abstraction and I believe it looks cool based on the overlapping and different coulurs making it look cool while also having a feel of learning. this workshop has taught me a range of techniques such as how to use a light mat and I got to use a slide projector I want to use this technique in my gcses as to show the examiner that I can pick up and use new skills.

pictures for photobook
i like these images as they are abstract and i myself think the are the best i got from all my homeworks as the work behind them was hard which shows by the results
Saul Leiter
Saul Lieter was photograper who used a range of techniques to distort views and create a point of intrest he used an array of weathers including rain and snow and using colors that compliment each other. He made his photos hard to make out so when people looked at them they would spend some time to focus and try to understand what he has taken a picture of through a distorted view.he once wanted to be an artist his early pieces from when he moved to Manhattan where showing depth but later started to do photography.
Photography allows you to learn to look and see. You begin to see things you'd never paid attention to.
i think this shows how he is creative and takes it as if you are not open to find something you will never find it and how photography is a learning process you can never know everything as new ways are being discoverd all the time it also represents his methods well how he makes his art difficult to understand so you pay more attention.
shallow depth of field: only parts of the image are in view
vibrant, complimentary color combinations: e.g red/green, purple/yellow, blue/orange
Negative space: leaving areas of the image empty
mirrors, windows and reflections to distort view
range of weathers such as rain and snow to add elements of the unknown

these were my attempts of making Saul Leiters photos as painting i had one of his photographs and looked at details and tried to make them into my picture. we did this because it let us understand his work and try to use his methods to make our own pieces also helping us get pictures that resemle his work.
from trying to copy his pictures i understood what Saul Leiters methods and what he wanted others to see in his work and what made him want to make his pictures
for this work we had some coulored card and we had to go around the school getting pictures using the card to block some fields of veiw and create emphasis on the subject this was inspired by Saul Leiters work but using methods that can be done at school.
this was my favorite picture i got as it creates a lot of power from how close the card was although it had a subject it was still hard to understand and this was what i was aiming for.
homework
today i went around the school with a piece of card and a mirror to get more pictures based on Saul Lieters work by using reflections and focus to obscure the view of the camera and make a range of photographs.
